What is remarkable about self-portraiture is
that a subject so rich in complexity should be
furnished by our own trivial persons. The mere
projection of self-image is after all only the most
obvious of possibilities; the real kick is to see
itself in the act of seeing, to see the actor disappear
in the action, and self disappear altogether. Thus it
was said, of a self-portrait by Cezanne, that the artist
was like a dog that saw itself in a mirror and thought,
"There goes another dog".
