Doing the studies in graphite for the self-portrait
was easy and spontaneous. Self-portraits in direct
image media are always an involvement psychologically
and a look inward. However, I was not
prepared to experience the hours and days of doing
a self-portrait edition, even though there were
only 20 in the edition. Working every day for six
weeks, staring at 20 images that gradually emerged
into form and definition from the application of 72
screenings of color, provided many personal
thoughts long forgotten as well as new ones. The
experience was not narcissistic, nor fun, but a catharsis,
an emotional drain, and a new awareness.
